Choose your base

  • Lagos: old-town atmosphere, beaches and access to western scenery.
  • Tavira: a gentler eastern base with historic character.
  • Albufeira: broad accommodation choice and lively evenings.
  • Faro: practical transport, local city life and access to the Ria Formosa.

Plan realistically

Distances can be greater than they look. Public transport links towns, but a car can make quieter beaches and inland villages easier. Never assume cliff paths or sea conditions are safe—follow local signs and official advice.

Eat

Look for grilled fish, cataplana, regional sweets and seasonal produce. Menus and opening days vary outside peak season.

A flexible four-day plan

Day 1 · Settle into your town

Walk the centre, identify your easiest beach and keep dinner local.

Day 2 · Coast

Choose a marked coastal walk, beach day or licensed boat trip according to conditions.

Day 3 · Another side of the region

Visit a contrasting town rather than repeating the same resort experience.

Day 4 · Inland or completely idle

Try Silves or Monchique, or protect a full day for doing very little.
